Geography & Geology

Located between three mountain ranges, Western Ghats in the West, Eastern Ghats in the East and the Satpura and Vindhya Range in the north, Deccan Plateau extends over almost eight Indian states. The Deccan Plateau is home to many languages and people. Right from Marathi, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam to the language of poets- Urdu. Comprising of states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and parts of Gujrat, it is no wonder that the Deccan Plateau is not only rich in traditions and culture but also heritage.

The Deccan Plateau forms the catchment areas of mighty rivers like the Godavari, Indravani, Tungabhadra, Krishna, Bhima, Kaveri, most of which drain into the Bay of Bengal. Its forests, relatively dry, serve to retain the rain to form streams that feed into rivers that flow into basins.

The climate of the region varies from Sub Tropical in the extreme north to Tropical in most of the region with distinct wet and dry seasons. Rainfall occurs during the wet or monsoon season from about June to October. March to June can be very dry and hot with temperatures exceeding 40°C. These climatic conditions and the black soil of the region are apt for growing sandalwood and teak and crops like cotton, sugarcane, cereals, pulses, fruits and spices.

But the remarkable winter season (November-February) is when the vines bear fruit and ripen. The temperatures are low and steady, with days shorter than the nights. This helps to retain acidity, accumulation of flavors and sugars in the grapes, thus leading in production of premium to good quality wines.

Tea in the South and coffee plantations in the North East rank high in the area, closely followed by coconuts and lemon trees.

The Deccan region is rich in minerals too. Primary mineral ores found in this region are mica, iron ore, diamonds and gold along with other metals.
